The radiologists
behind RPE

I worked in a hospital for twelve years, and enjoyed it enormously. But three or four years ago, the workload started to feel like assembly-line work, and that’s when I decided to open my own private practice.

As a radiologist, I may prefer working independently, but I’m glad to have colleagues I can bring difficult cases to for a second opinion — together, we keep progressing and learning. That matters here, because we see a lot of acute pathology: diverticulitis, appendicitis, even sub-obstructions. The cases we come across in practice are genuinely interesting.

We’ve worked with artificial intelligence from the very start. AI algorithms are evolving at a staggering pace — and thanks to the size of the RPE network, we can keep up with them.

I worked in a hospital for ten years before moving to private practice. You can’t really compare the two, but I’ve found the contact — with patients, and with the team — is actually far more interesting in private practice.

It’s the referring physician who decides what we do. Sometimes a doctor sends us a patient requesting a particular exam, and we think another exam would serve the patient better — but the physician performing the procedure has the final say.

My role within RPE has given me room to grow, medically but especially as a manager. And the best part is that I still work the way I always have: from A to Z, we’ve genuinely kept our independence.

What I find compelling about private practice is how close you are to the patient — you never feel like just another link in a chain. My technologist is really my right hand; on a good day, we can see past a hundred patients without even noticing.

People often associate private radiology with plain X-rays, but that’s no longer the case — we offer practically every examination. Since RPE arrived, the technology has moved forward the most: it’s become the backbone of the practice, with AI, software, and teleradiology all part of how we work now.

In the long run, this way of working is far more balanced. RPE takes a lot of worries off our hands, which lets us focus on what really matters — the patient and their care. That wasn’t always true in my previous experience.
